It didn't rain during the parade Memorial Day, and it didn't snow, so I think a fine time was had by all.
There was a very good turnout here in Auburn, and I'm sure elsewhere.
Our next big day is Father's Day, June 18. It was started in 1910 by a woman whose father had raised all his children, after the mother had died. She realized what a great job her father had done and wanted to honor him. I'm so glad. My father was a great man, and accomplished so much against many odds - his mother died after he was born, his father died when he was 2.
He came to America when he was 12. He never went to school; he taught himself to read and write by buying the newspaper and asking what the words were.
He taught himself to drive by buying his first car, paying 25 cents for his license, which you could do then and following the car salesman's instructions, he drove the car home from the dealer. He used to laugh about it - saying it took him hours because he would drive about one or two blocks, stop and wait a few minutes to make sure what he was doing was right. I can't even imagine it. There were different rules then.
This past Sunday, we had an ethnic dinner and show at SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church. It was a fundraiser. We had Greek food and Greek dancers from St. Sophisa Church in Syracuse, Italian food and music by Paul Saltarello who sang accompanied by Sam Giacona on the accordion, American food and a dance performance by Absolute Dance and Scottish food with Betsy Buchanan playing the bagpipes. It was a wonderful event and enjoyed by all.
The food and entertainment were top shelf, and I'm sure we should do it again next year.
There are probably several graduation parties, showers and weddings on everyone's schedules this month. There are on mine. I hope everyone has an enjoyable time.
My ethnic recipe today is Scottish. It was given to me by Betsy Buchanan. We made it for the ethnic dinner, and it was delicious. Then I have also included two recipes which should make a nice dinner menu. These are Apple Meat Loaf and Potato Casserole.
Today's blooper
My blooper for today happened many years ago. I was talking to a lady and she was telling me about it.
When she was newly married and had just settled into their home, she cooked the first dinner they were going to eat as a married couple. She was very pleased and proud of how it looked.
Her husband started eating and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. When she sat down and started to eat, she was shocked. It was so salty, and he had told her everything was delicious.
He never said a word so as not to hurt her feelings. Such a gentleman. She didn't know the salt shaker she used had a large hole in it and the food was filled with salt.
They never forgot their first meal as a married couple. She was still laughing as she told me about it.
