At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District (BID) will hold its annual membership meeting. The meeting will take place at the American Red Cross facilities, located on 11 State St. in downtown Auburn.
Anyone who lives, runs a business or owns property in downtown is considered a BID member. If you are not a BID member but are interested in what is happening in downtown Auburn, you are still encouraged to come to the meeting; it will be open to the public. However, only BID members will be allowed to vote on any items on the agenda.

At the meeting, the July 2005-June 2006 annual report will be presented.

Following the annual report, there will be an open forum. This will allow anyone in attendance to comment on the annual report or to ask questions of the BID board and staff.

At the conclusion of the open forum, the election of board members will take place. All BID members will be able to vote in the election. Members who cannot attend the meeting can vote by proxy. This year, there are seven seats on the board that are up for election. Five of these seats must be filled by individuals who own property downtown. One seat must be filled by a commercial tenant of downtown. And, one seat must be filled by a residential tenant of downtown.

Typically, the elections are uncontested. Most times, the BID board and staff must actively recruit candidates to be on the board. At times, not all open board seats are filled. For example, as of the writing of this column, the BID lacks a candidate to fill the residential tenant seat on the board.

If you are a BID member and are interested in serving on the board, you are encouraged to contact the BID office at 252-7874. There may be a spot open for you now. If there isn't, you can either wait for a vacancy to occur, or you can choose to contest the election of a candidate. In such a case, you will be required to obtain 10 signatures on a petition form. Membership will then vote on all the candidates at the annual meeting. The candidates that receive the most votes will win.

After the election of the new board on July 12, the annual meeting will adjourn, and the first meeting of the new board will be held. This board meeting will also be open to the public - as are all BID board meetings. The major item on the agenda of this meeting will be the selection of the executive board of the BID. The executive board consists of the board president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and any other officer the board chooses to appoint.

So, if you are interested in the revitalization efforts of downtown Auburn, and if you are interested in meeting the individuals chosen to lead those efforts, please join us at the Red Cross on July 12. You will not go home empty-handed. Copies of the newly completed five-year strategic plan for the BID will be available. And, perhaps more importantly, breakfast and coffee will be served free of charge. All you need to do is call the BID office by Monday, July 10, and let us know you will be coming.

Hope to see you July 12.
