CORTLAND -Despite having just scored the goal that clinched the state title, Skaneateles attack Libby Johnson was a bit confused.
“When we were walking through the line after the game I asked someone, ‘Did we really win?'” Johnson said. “I don't think anybody knows what to do now.”
After clinching its second consecutive Class C state title with a 6-5 victory over Penn Yan Saturday, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team charged the field to find the closest teammate, deciding it was better to hug than ask questions. But the disbelief was warranted, considering the Lakers lost eight seniors from last year's squad. The Lakers were greeted by cheering friends and family outside the stadium, most of which followed the police-escorted the team bus home to Skaneateles. Along the way, blue and gold balloons and “Go Lakers” signs lined Route 41, providing a fitting welcome home for the two-time defending state champs.
