CANTON - When Weedsport's Nick VanWie finally came down after taking off in the triple jump, he landed securely in the record books - by a long shot.
His longest jump this season - 39 feet, 9 inches - was an inch shy of the school record.
He shattered it Friday, though, launching himself 44 feet, 5 inches to finish second in Division II in the triple jump and ninth in the state at the New York State Track and Field Championships at St. Lawrence University on Friday.
“Nick was outstanding,” Weedsport coach Tom Kunkel said. “He finally got everything together.”
VanWie was seeded fifth entering the competition.
On the girls side, Allie Beardsley represented the Warriors and finished sixth in Division II and 13th in the state in the triple jump (33-10.75).
“It was one of her best jumps of the year,” Kunkel said. “She consistently got better.”
Beardsley, who fouled on her first jump by crossing the line, came back with two strong jumps to make the finals.
