CORTLAND -- It took until the very end, but the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team got it done.
Libby Johnson scored the game-winning goal with 12.2 seconds remaining, and the Lakers won their second consecutive state championship with a 6-5 victory over Penn Yan Saturday morning.
After trailing 4-1 at halftime, the Lakers found some offense in the second half. Stephanie Rice scored with four minutes left to tie the score at five.
Penn Yan won the ensuing draw, but the Lakers forced a turnover and controlled the play for the duration. They managed three shots -- including one off the crossbar from Kelsey Nangle -- and scooped up the loose ball each time. After Nangle's shot rang off the pipe, the Lakers recovered the ball, only to have it knocked away by a defender. Johnson corralled the loose ball 10 feet from the net and bounced a shot past the Penn Yan keeper.
The Lakers won the following draw to seal the game.
