Skaneateles to defend state title Saturday

The Citizen staff report
CICERO -- The Lakers only have one more to go.

Stephanie Rice scored five times and Libby Johnson added four more to lift the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team to a 14-11 win over Shoreham-Wading River Friday morning in the state semifinals.

The Lakers will play Penn Yan at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for their second state championship in as many years.

After getting in an early hole -- the Lakers trailed 2-0 after less than two minutes -- Skaneateles poured it on. The Lakers won five straight draws that led to five goals and a lead they never surrendered, holding an 11-6 advantage at halftime.

But Shoreham-Wading River would not go quietly. The Wildcats scored three quick goals to pull within 11-9.

That was as close as the game got, though, after Johnson and Rice combined to score the next three goals and put the Lakers into the finals.
