At least in Section III, Class B. But they're not done there.
The Eagles won a sectional title Sunday by shutting out Adirondack, 3-0. This is the second sectional title for the Eagles this week after they took home B-1 by defeating South Jefferson Wednesday. Adirondack earned the class B-2 championship on the same day by beating Canastota, 4-1. teams were seeded No. 1 in sectionals for their respective divisions.
The title win advances the Eagles to 20-0 for the first time in school history. They will face a Section X team today at Gillette Road Field in Cicero. The winner of the regionals game will advance to the state tournament.
The Eagles smashed 10 hits - seven of them in the first two innings, when they scored all of their runs.
Second baseman Rachal Graf began the six-hit first inning with a single to right field and later scored the first run off an RBI single by Jessica Snyder. Snyder then scored the second run of the inning when Lindsay Merrill smacked a single down the third-base line. Graf, Merrill and Ellen Dungey were the only multiple hitters of the game, with two each.
Graf had an impressive performance in the second inning, but not before the game was delayed for several minutes due to rain. As the groundskeepers went to work on the sloppy field, Graf joked to her teammates that the delay was a plot to freeze her at the plate. It did anything but hinder her performance as she promptly singled, just out of shortstop Chrissy Klara's reach. The next two pitches thrown by the Wildcats' Halie Tyler went behind catcher Amanda Pratt and Graf saw opportunities to grab extra bases. She stole second and third on the first errant throw and then sprinted home on the second and Pratt couldn't reach her in time.
“(My teammates) were worried about me stealing, but I wasn't,” Graf said. “I saw that the catcher didn't have the ball, so I just went for it.”
Tyler finished the day with two strikeouts, but she allowed just one walk. The Eagles only got on base three times in the final five innings, but their stingy defense was able to contain the Wildcats.
Standout thrower Colleen Ryan once again put forth a superior performance, allowing just four hits and two walks. She was responsible for every out, firing 20 strikeouts. The right-handed hurler only needed seven pitches in the seventh - all strikes - but it was her left hand that ended the game when she caught a pop up just outside the first-base line.
An important part of Jordan-Elbridge's championship defense took a hit, though, when Samantha Kuhn injured her right knee during warm ups before the fifth inning. Head coach Joe Ryan isn't sure if she will be available for today's regional game.
“I don't know right now, she did that a couple of years ago and blew her knee out,” Joe Ryan said. “It's very sore right now but luckily Elizabeth (Caspari) plays short too, so she will be able to jump in and pick it up.”
Despite the perfect record, the Eagles still have a tough road if they hope to be the best in the state.
“We could have hit a little better today, we started off early and then the bats went to sleep a little bit,” Joe Ryan said. “But our defense keeps us in those close games and if Colleen pitches like that again, it's going to be real tough.”
