The Union Springs softball team managed just six hits in a 6-2 loss to Thomas A. Edison in a Section IV, Class C semifinal game on Friday.
The Wolves were down 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when Bethany Arliss and Abby Cook each singled and then Jillian Thomas smacked an RBI to prevent the shutout. Cook later scored on a pass ball from the Spartans pitcher. She also pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and fanning as many batters.
“It was an uphill battle from the start when (TAE) led the game off with a triple, which took us out of the game a little,” Union Springs coach Bob Arliss said.
This is the second time in a week the Wolves fell to the Spartans. Union Springs ended its season at 17-4 and with an IAC division title for the first time in 17 years. They will graduate several talented seniors this month in Bethany Arliss, Kalie Carter, Devon Bowen, Amanda Feocco and Cook.
“The last few years I have been telling these girls that there are a lot of tough teams that we face,” Bob Arliss said. “But this year I can say that about my girls. They have been tough all year.”
