In 1994, Donald F. Doody had a serious accident while working on his dairy farm.
“It almost cost me my life and would have, had it not been for Dr. Thomas Sullivan,” he stated in a letter to Auburn Memorial Hospital's administrator. “His knowledge and expertise allowed him to identify the severity of the situation and get me the urgent care that was needed to save my life. Consequently I have enjoyed 12 more years of living a productive life, doing the work I love.”
Doody went on to say, “When I was in the direst of situations, AMH was there for me. The quality of care I received made all the difference. I understand that the hospital is now facing some very difficult times financially. I want to lend a hand to help out. It is out of my deep gratitude and desire to see continued quality care available to the community of Auburn, that I am enclosing a gift of $100,000. This is money I have saved for my retirement. I do not plan to retire, and therefore I would like to see AMH use it to do the work that you have a history of doing so well.”
Doody operates Doody Farms in Fleming. When he was 62, he went to his barn early one morning to milk his cows. He was kicked in the wrist area by a cow, causing a painful wound. His wife Doris drove him to the Auburn Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. Dr. Thomas J. Sullivan, the orthopedic surgeon on call, operated. “If Dr. Sullivan hadn't made the correct diagnosis and operated, I could have lost my arm or even died,” Doody stated.
Dr. Sullivan remembered Doody's case and said it was fortunate that a community hospital was available that could provide essential care in a rapid fashion. “He needed emergency treatment and the delay of going to another hospital might have been too much,” he said.
Brendan McGrath, AMH administrator, stated, “Mr. Doody's generosity is overwhelming and deeply appreciated by all of us at Auburn Memorial. It is gratifying to know that the hospital has been there when people like Mr. Doody needed us, and heartening that in turn, he is willing to step forward and support the hospital as we face challenges.
With friends like him, we have confidence that we will continue to be here for our community.” The funds will be used to support the hospital's capital equipment budget for 2006.
