AMSTERDAM - A pregnant woman who died in the street as she left home to deliver her baby wasn't a hit-and-run victim, as initially believed, but died from a head injury after she fainted, police said.
Amsterdam Police Chief Tom Brownell said the death Thursday of 31-year-old Jennifer Lewis was “a sad set of circumstances” that did not involve an unidentified motorist who happened to be driving past her home at the moment she fell. An autopsy performed at Albany Medical Center found Lewis died after she fractured her skull and suffered an aneurysm, or bleeding in the brain. Doctors did an emergency caesarean section at the hospital but were unable to save the baby.
The victim's husband, Hector Lewis told police his wife was struck by a gray Buick LeSabre, and he gave a license plate number. After reading news accounts, the driver of the vehicle described contacted police and offered his car for inspection, Brownell said.
The chief said Jennifer Lewis had been bleeding all day and had fallen backward onto the pavement, most likely from the blood loss.
Amsterdam is 28 miles northwest of Albany.
