CICERO - The Maroons' hot streak finally cooled.
The Auburn baseball team committed two errors which led to five unearned runs in the first inning and the Maroons fell 10-4 to Cicero-North Syracuse in the second round of the Section III Class AA Tournament.
Steve Deyo started on the mound for Auburn (12-12) and allowed no earned runs in four innings of work.
“We never gave up,” Auburn coach Ed Gremli said. “But if you spot a team five runs in the first you're in trouble, no matter who you're playing.”
The Northstars are the top seed in Class AA and the 13th ranked team in the state.
The Maroons got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Dan Zambito hit an RBI triple, followed by a Zach Prentice RBI single.
Auburn scored two more in the seventh, as Greg Feocco singled and Ryan Gleason (two hits) knocked him in with a triple. Gleason later scored on a passed ball.
Mike Assmann had three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
After an inconsistent 5-10 start to the season, the Maroons finished at a torrid pace, going 6-1 to close the regular season.
Auburn opened sectional play Tuesday with an 11-1 rout of Rome Free Academy. The Maroons had already lost twice this year to C-NS but only by a combined three runs. Gremli and the players hoped the third time would be the charm.
Nonetheless, the loss won't tarnish a season in which the Maroons came together to make an impressive playoff push.
“We had a nice run together at the end of the season,” Gremli said. “This game doesn't take away from how hard these guys worked.”
