Feds may give $300K for county digester
More outside funding should be on the way for Cayuga County's methane digester project.
The federal government's 2007 energy and water appropriations bill passed this week by the U.S. House of Representatives includes $300,000 for the $3.3 million county project, said U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-New Hartford.
Boehlert said he fought for the funding during a tight budget year for the federal government because the project is a great example of fostering renewable energy sources, something the country needs to develop.
The digester will process manure and other organic materials to produce cheap electricity.
Quartet to kick off summer at the Nest
The R&B quartet Stroke will kick off the Polish Falcons Nest's free Friday night outdoor summer concert series from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight, at the Nest, 75 Pulaksi St. in Auburn, in celebration of the its 100th anniversary.
The series will feature 15 different musical acts, and wraps up Sept. 1 with John Reilly's original Americana roots quartet, Roadside Traveler.
Food and beer concessions will be available.
Special raffles will also take place during the summer.
Summerfest at The Nest will be held rain or shine.
In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors.
Man charged with assault attempts
An Auburn man was charged earlier this week with holding a 28-inch samurai-style sword to the head of a 14-year-old boy.
Brian S. Cuatt, 36, of 15 Perrine St. Apt. 2, also was charged by the Auburn Police Department with throwing a steel steering wheel at a woman during a domestic incident at his residence Monday.
The dispute began Monday afternoon when Cuatt wanted to sell DVDs for money against the woman's wishes.
Cuatt threw the steering wheel at the woman as he tried to leave the front porch with the DVDs, police reported.
Cuatt then went inside the house, armed himself with a samurai sword mounted on the apartment wall and put the sword to the head of the teenager, police reported.
He has been charged with the misdemeanor crimes of second-degree menacing, fourth-degree reckless endangerment, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
Cuatt was arraigned in Auburn City Court Wednesday and released on $100 bail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, June 22.
