Enough donations have come in - and enough are expected to continue coming in - to allow both Auburn High School students chosen for this year's Civil Rights Connection tour to participate.
AHS juniors Candice Elliott and Reagan Cuddy were among roughly 20 central New York students selected for the annual journey to key civil rights movements sites in the South, but a last-minute pullout by a program sponsor jeopardized funding for half of the students. If not enough funds were raised, Elliott was not going to be able to go. Elliott and Cuddy have been busy the last few weeks trying to secure sponsors for the program, which is run by former state Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann.
Thanks to those efforts, both Auburn students will be boarding a plane for Memphis on Saturday.
“It's been really heartwarming to see so many people from the Auburn area sending us checks,” Hoffmann said.
Though both students are now going, the program still has a need for funding.
