It was recently announced that a lien was placed on the Auburn Memorial Hospital pension fund due to an outstanding ongoing pension fund deficit.
In light of this announcement, The Citizen asked me if I believed the $1 million state grant, which Assemblyman Gary Finch and I fought to secure, was in reality throwing good money after bad.

Absolutely not! I strongly view the $1 million state grant for Auburn Memorial Hospital as one of the single most important grants I have secured in my years of service to the Cayuga County community.

Auburn Memorial Hospital is absolutely vital to the future of Cayuga County and I am proud to be leading the fight to not only keep the facility open, but to build a brighter future for the only hospital in all of Cayuga County.

While it is true that Auburn Memorial has gone through some very difficult economic times and there is a deficit in the pension fund, the hospital board of directors have taken aggressive steps to reduce the deficit and restructure the business practices of the hospital.

The administrators of the hospital have brought in knowledgeable consultants who are recognized leaders in the health care field and who specialize in restoring financial stability for struggling hospitals such as AMH.

The pension fund creditors chose to take a secondary debt position, which allows the hospital to continue operations and implement positive actions to make the hospital profitable once again.

The actions being implemented at the hospital are beginning to yield positive results as AMH posted a profit for the month of March and severely reduced its losses in the last fiscal quarter. Both are cause for optimism.

Thousands of families count on AMH for emergency medical services.

How many loved ones have had their lives saved due to the quality of care at AMH for more than 150 years?

Local residents deserve quality health care and they also deserve a new, stronger and revitalized hospital.

I view the $1 million state grant as a down payment on a brighter future for a hospital, that is simply too important to our community to accept anything less.
