AUBURN - Cayuga County's many attractions and events could become lonely places if more people don't spread the word.

Spreading the word was the focus of a Wednesday workshop - Tools for Tourism - sponsored by the Cayuga County Office of Tourism.
The meeting was designed to help service professionals from organizations around the county learn about events, services and public features that the area has to offer.
Representatives from Holiday Inn of Auburn, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Fingerlakes Mall, Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum, and other organizations met at Willard Memorial Chapel to discuss local events and characteristics that will attract
visitors to the region.
The meeting, held round-table style, was led by Meg Vanek, executive director of the tourism office.
“Today's meeting was held to give people - those that are on the frontlines of interacting with tourists - information that will in turn help them give visitors to Cayuga County and the entire Finger Lakes region, info about the accommodations, attractions, and events in this area,” Vanek said.
“A lot of people don't know about the resources we have in our office, like brochures and maps, so (the meeting) was held to show them everything that is available to them,” she added.
The presentation was held informally, with those attending speaking out about new ideas, features, and information that were beneficial to the rest of the group.
“Some of the audience had a few good ideas about some things we can include to help people give more information,” Vanek said.
One of those ideas was to learn more about walk-in clinics in the area, to help those in need of medical attention, she said.
Joni Lincoln, a Conquest resident who works part-time at the county historian's office, was one of those at the presentation.
“We need to promote Cayuga County even more than we already do,” Lincoln said. “The tourism in your own backyard can make a huge difference, so that's what we all need to focus on,” she said.
