After splitting two games this season, the Union Springs softball team scored three times in the sixth inning to defeat Southern Cayuga 5-1 in a playoff game in Lansing Thursday.
Despite pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts, Southern Cayuga's Julie Hewitt allowed nine hits in the loss. Jaimi Jones led the game off with a triple for Union Springs, and the Chiefs never caught
up. Amanda Forney had two RBIs, while Abby Cook, Devon Bowen and Jillian Thomas had two hits each for the Wolves. Bethany Arliss led the Wolves defense, with five impressive plays.
“This is the best game we've played all year,” Union Springs coach Bob Arliss said. “Everybody played well and the defense was amazing.”
Cook also pitched a complete game for Union Springs, with five strikeouts and allowing six hits. Lindsay Doeing and Colleen Lukas had two hits for the Chiefs and Doeing had the RBI.
Union Springs dedicated the game to John Howland, who is a recent graduate of the school and has been ill. The Wolves (16-2) finish the division in second place and will play Thomas A. Edison at Spencer Van Etten in the IAC playoffs on Saturday.
