AUBURN - Eastern Connecticut was perfect in two games Saturday at Falcon Park to force a matchup Sunday against Cortland to determine a winner of the Division III Regional Baseball Tournament.
Fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut made easy work of No. 2 Ithaca in the early game, winning 14-3 and eliminating the Bombers.
Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Josh Smith belted a two-run home run, his third of the season, to left field.
They added another run in the top of the fourth, but the Bombers' lead vanished quickly after that.
Eastern Connecticut stormed right back, playing small ball for two runs in the bottom of the third, and then scoring in each of the next four innings to pad the lead.
In all, Eastern Connecticut banged out 16 hits.
Marc Garofalo and Shawn Gilblair each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Zack Thomas was 2-for-2.
Smith was the only Bomber to have a multi-hit game, adding a single to his home run.
Alex Narus was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game, and Ryan Mays took the loss.
In the second game, Cortland and Eastern Connecticut traded leads in the beginning, before Matt Cooney led off the sixth inning with atie-breking home run to put the Warriors on top for good.
Randy Re put the game out of reach with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Andrew Mead led the Red Dragons with a pair of hits. In all, five Warriors pitchers allowed only six hits.
Chris Bilyk took the loss for Cortland, and the Warriors' Sam Iverson earned the win.
The Red Dragons' loss is the first time they have entered the championship round undefeated and lost.
Cortland has won seven regional titles, and Eastern Connecticut has won 10. Cortland defeated Eastern Connecticut, 9-0, Thursday.
