SKANEATELES - The Jordan-Elbridge baseball team has improved since its opening day 11-0 loss to Skaneateles less than a month ago.

Skaneateles' Matt Wild slides in safely into second base on a steal as Jordan-Elbridge's Mike Ryan prepares for the catch during their game at Skaneateles High School Monday afternoon.
The Eagles had yet to win a game coming into Monday's rematch against their Section III, Class B rival, but they had scored an average of nine runs in the last five games, compared to the one run scored in the first three. The Eagles played a tight game and kept pace with the division-leading Lakers, until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lakers scored five runs. Jordan-Elbridge wasn't able to score in the final two innings and lost 12-4.

“We're getting better, improving slowly but surely,” Jordan-Elbridge coach Mike Osborn said. “Since the beginning of the year we've done a lot better. They still don't have that first win, but they are playing a lot harder.”

Jordan-Elbridge collected nine hits but left nine batters stranded on base. They showed promise in the first inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Mike Ryan and Matt Willsey smacked back-to-back RBI singles for the team's only lead of the game. The Lakers responded by banging out four hits and three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Skaneateles' lead-off hitter, Mike Perkins, was hit by a Jason Coleman pitch and Eric Schaeffer hit an RBI double at the next at bat. Schaeffer was later caught trying to steal third base as the Eagles' Lucas Overton ran him down back to second. Perkins led the Lakers with three hits and two runs scored.

The Lakers scored their next two runs on consecutive RBIs from Andrew Bojko and Sam Sarofeen.

Coleman had a tough day on the mound, allowing 11 hits, three walks and striking out two batters in 5 1-3 innings.

The Eagles tied the game at three in the top of the third when Landry Mack smacked an RBI single into right field, driving home Nick Chartrand. Chartrand, Ryan and Craig Amidon led the Eagles with two hits each.

Skaneateles took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Josh Sherman stole home on an error by Overton. The Lakers pushed further ahead in the fourth, scoring three more runs off four hits and a walk. Mike Pesarchick smashed a two-RBI double that was just inches from going over the fence. He scored three runs on the day. Adding insult to injury for the Eagles, Sherman (two runs) hit an RBI triple with the next at bat.

Defensively, the Lakers had three errors, but solid pitching efforts from both Shaeffer (4 2-3 innings, one strikeout, three runs, two walks) and Perkins (3 1-3 innings, two strikeouts, three walks). Shaeffer also had a theatric catch in the sixth inning while playing short stop. After bobbling the ball twice in his glove, he made a diving catch with his bare hand.

“I thought that the middle infield made some really nice plays today,” Skaneateles coach Mike Flood said. “We've been working a lot on the pop fly play between the infield and outfield and they did a real good job of that today.”

The Eagles scored their final run in the fifth inning when Ryan stole home on an erratic throw from Perkins. The Lakers had just three of their 15 hits in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles' John Wilson, who pitched the final outs of the game, walked two batters and hit Pesarchick with a pitch. Sarofeen and Alex Angelillo both hit two-RBI doubles and Bojko scored on an overthrown ball by Chartrand.

“I'm thrilled that we won the game, but disappointed in our lackluster effort today. We were flat,” Flood said. “With the kind of errors that we had today, when the ball comes into the glove and then just falls out, those are eventually going to lose us some games.”

This was the third game in four days for the Lakers as they had an emotional 5-4 win over Bishop Ludden on Sunday. It doesn't get any easier for the Lakers (9-1) as they host Westhill (8-3) on Wednesday.

“We took care of what we had to do, but it's tough coming off of a big win like we did in Cooperstown (on Sunday), but I wish we had a little more passion and desire in this ball game,” Flood said. “Against Westhill, we're going to need to bear down and have two good days of practice. We have to work on some defensive situational work and get some things ironed out.”

The Eagles (0-9) face another division rival on Wednesday when they host Bishop Ludden (8-4).
