Board to hear from students at meeting
The Southern Cayuga Central School District Board of Education will hear from students who recently took a trip to Washington, D.C., as part of their public affairs class at the regular meeting scheduled for tonight.
The agenda for the meeting also includes votes on a sports agreement with the Union Springs Central School District and a service agreement with the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES. Several personnel matters will also be considered.
The public portion of the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the planetarium classroom.
Tickets available for garden tour
Advance tickets are being sold at Creekside Books and Coffee in Skaneateles for the annual Mother's Day Garden Tour at Hanford's Sycamore Hill Gardens, which takes place Sunday, May 14.
The event at the farm at 2130 Old Seneca Turnpike in Marcellus runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It features 25 acres of manicured gardens, three ponds with koi fish, 400 types of trees, 20 statues and more than 500,000 flowering bulbs.
Tickets cost $5 in advance or $8 at the gate. In addition to the Skaneateles location, advance tickets can be bought in Marcellus at The Beanery, Key Bank, Angel Heart Gifts and the office of the education center at Baltimore Woods. The event itself is a fundraiser for Baltimore Woods.
County housing market echoes state
The housing market in Cayuga County became more active in March, but sales values declined slightly, according to the latest industry figures.
The New York State Association of Realtors reported there were 56 closed sales of single-family homes in the county during March, up from 49 during the same month in 2005 and 35 during February. The median sale price - the point at which half of all sales fall above or below - was $78,500. That figure was down from both the year-ago total of $80,103 and the February median price of $85,000.
The same trend, higher sales volume and lower prices, was seen statewide.
“The March data supports our statewide forecast, which projects a slowing down from the historically high sales levels of 2005 and 2004,” said Charles M. Staro, NYSAR's chief executive officer, in a press release.
BOE's Hunter to be honored May 10

Patricia Hunter will be honored during the reception at the Highland Golf and Country Club, Franklin Street Road, Sennett.

AHS to host staged DWI crash tonight
In an effort to educate teens about the dangers of underage drinking, the Auburn High School chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions has organized a mock DWI crash for 6 p.m. today at the school.
The staged accident, which will be conducted with help from local emergency services professionals, is designed to illustrate what can happen when people drink and drive.
Following the accident will be a viewing of the film “Smashed” in the high school library.
