The Cayuga County Civil Service Commission is putting the money allotted for advertising for a county manager nearly to full use.
Throughout April, the commission has placed ads in a variety of sources.

Among them are 40 daily newspapers, the Web sites of the national and New York state associations of counties, the state Job Bank and Cablevision in the city of Auburn.

“It's all over the place,” said Commission Executive Secretary Faye Hatfield.

The return? As of Friday, Hatfield had 16 applications in hand. The commission's own Web site, where those interested can download the application, had received 576 page views.

Yates County Administrator Sarah Purdy, who is also president of the New York State Association of County Administrators and Managers, has estimated that Cayuga County could receive between 35 and 50 applications for the position.

Hatfield said there would likely be a rush of applications just before the May 10 deadline.

“I would hope to get more applicants before the deadline,” Legislature Chairman George Fearon, R-Springport, said Friday, “and I would hope they're several good choices that we'll be able to work with.”

The Legislature has set a July 1 target date for having a county manager in place.

Civil Service will look through the applications to ensure individuals meet the minimum requirements, Hatfield said, but all applications will be turned over to a subcommittee of the Legislature's county manager qualifications committee.

The latter committee, which is comprised of the Ways and Means Committee, Legislature chairman and minority and majority leaders, will be involved in the ins and outs of the selection of Cayuga County's first manager.

The Legislature approved the creation of the position at its February meeting.

Last month, legislators set the salary range at $80,000 to $100,000 and established an account for advertisement and recruitment; advertisement costs were set not to exceed $5,000. Hatfield said Friday that advertising expenses totaled $4,374.
