New York State Police based in Auburn are seeking a robber who threatened a 73-year-old woman with a handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of money at the Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius.
The woman was robbed around 12:45 p.m. in the mall parking lot outside of the catalog department exit of the JCPenney's store Friday.

Police are seeking a white male about 5 feet 7 inches tall with short, dirty blond hair. The man was wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt.

The woman was leaving the Aurelius mall when the suspect displayed a handgun and demanded money from her. He fled after she gave him the money.

She was not injured during the robbery, state police said.

No witnesses saw the robbery take place, state police reported. The robbery victim was the person who made the 911 call to authorities.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of the mall is asked to call the state police at 255-2766.

" Auburn is still safe. An isolated incident outside the mall is no reason to lose faith in the community. Given that, people need to take more pride in the appearance of the city. That's a nationwide problem. Across the country those with the means and the desire to improve the appearance of their neighborhoods have moved to suburbs leaving cities to rot. "

" After a recent visit back to Auburn I realized how run down and trashing things have become. Sleepy little town with sleepy little wanna be's. The houses look run down, un-groomed and sloppy. Thing is no one cares. When I grew up in Auburn the population was in the low 20's, it is still that. No growth, nothing to prosper or encourage community awareness or growth. There is no pride. The "rif-raf" is taking over what could be a nice small town. Mainly because parents don't care, not only don't they care, but they are too busy smoking, drinking or pimping to even know where their children are. I would ask if it was a parent or child that attacked an elderly woman? Perhaps it was a tag team. I am so glad to have left this dying community. "

" I worked at the Mall in the 1980's when it was still safe to leave a store and walk to your car after working until 9PM. The world was a lot safer then. "

" what is this world comming to? i remember when you said "yes sir/mam," and "no sir/mam," and you respected those that were older than you. Auburn had never seemed to be so violent, now it starts younger and younger with the violence. All i have to say is robbing a 73-year old lady is very sad and i think the robber should be ashamed of themselves. dude that is someones grandmother! "
