AUBURN - Not many teams can rival the speed of the Auburn girls lacrosse team. On Tuesday, the Corcoran Cougars not only kept up with the Maroons, they nearly shut down Auburn's transition game.

The undefeated Cougars dominated the draws and allowed the Maroons no easy looks on goal in a 21-11 victory at Holland Stadium. A majority of the action took place around the Auburn net, but when the Maroons broke out, Corcoran's transition defense cut off the speedy Auburn attack.
“They're just a great team,” Auburn coach Amy Spin said of Corcoran. “In our division, they're No. 2 right now behind West Genesee. I'd love to tear into (my team) right now but they gave it their all. That's all I can ask. I'm proud of these girls.”
The Cougars won the first three draws of the game and scored on all three possessions. Flannery Nangle and Rosie
Scheibel gave the Maroons two early goals, but the Auburn defense couldn't stop Corcoran's offensive penetration.
“They're very good on offense. They set up some great plays,” Spin said. “We've got to use a lot of communication on defense. They're a tough team to slow down.”
With just less than seven minutes to play in the first half and the Maroons down 10-2, senior attack Kaylee Petrosino had to be helped off the field after being hit by a defender in the chest. The sight of an injured teammate apparently sparked the Maroons, as they won three consecutive draws and blew by the Cougar defense to the tune of three goals in 34 seconds. Alisha Brooks, Scheibel and Nangle provided the three scores and Auburn pulled closer 10-5.
“That fired us up,” Spin said of Petrosino's injury. “That's the definition of a team. When they see a teammate go down it's like pouring the fuel on.”
Corcoran maintained a 12-6 halftime lead but took advantage of some crafty passing around the net to jump on the Maroons for two quick goals to open the second half. Scheibel and Katelyn Liccion added two straight Auburn scores but the Maroons missed four straight shots and the momentum permanently shifted to the Cougars.
Corcoran took a majority of the draws for quick goals and spread the offense around. Each of the Cougars' eight second-half goals were scored by a different player.
“Draws are huge,” Spin said. “Offensive possession is huge. Draws usually decide a lot about what's going to happen. 80 percent of the time the team that wins the draw will get a goal or get a shot on goal and (Corcoran) had a lot of shots.”
Hillary Adam led Corcoran with five goals while Lauren Glavine and Abby Hungerford each chipped in with four.
JoLynn Brewer had five saves in the first half while Brittany Baran stopped four shots in the second. Nangle finished with three goals and two assists, Scheibel had four goals, Liccion had two scores and Brooks had a goal and an assist for Auburn.
The Maroons (4-5) travel to face Cicero-North Syracuse Thursday. Spin is pleased with her team's progress and despite the loss, says playing a team the caliber of Corcoran is a good learning experience.
“Our offense is getting more confident and that's important,” she said. “Our defense is improving. Most importantly, we're working hard. Coming up, we're facing some teams we can run with so hopefully we keep improving. If we play against C-NS like we did tonight we'll be in a good position to walk away with a win.”
