The Citizen staff report
A new road under construction in Auburn needs a name, and there's a resolution before the city council to use the opportunity to honor one of its former mayors.
City councilors will vote Thursday to name the new roadway being constructed between Grant Avenue and North Street.
The city's superintendent of engineering services notified the council recently that, as part of the connector road being built between Grant Avenue and North Street, the contractor has to supply and install street signs. "At this time," the April 21 memorandum reads, "there is no official name for the Connector Road."
The city council will consider the name at its meeting.
Because it has been past practice of some prior city councils to name a new road within the city after a former mayor of Auburn, the council will vote to name the road after one of the city's mayors, according to the resolution.
But with more than 50 mayors -- going back to 1848 -- how do you single out one?
Sylvanus H. Henry? Cyrenus Wheeler Jr.? Timothy C. Lattimore?
Former mayor Guy Cosentino said the current mayor can't be overlooked as a possibility.
"They have named streets after living mayors," Cosentino said, although he added it would be more likely the city would choose to recognize a relatively recent mayor who hasn't had anything named after him yet.
"They already have a (Edward) Boyle, (Carl) Brister, (Herbert) Anderson Circle and a (Leonard) Greene Street near the (Edward) Boyle Center," he said.
"It would be nice to recognize whoever's next on the list," Cosentino said. "Maybe it should be (Maurice) Schwartz."
Schwartz Towers, a senior living center, is named after Schwartz.
