Meier endorsed by Chenango GOP
Ray Meier, a Republican candidate for the 24th Congressional district seat Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-New Hartford, is vacating with his retirement, received his latest endorsement Saturday from the Chenango County Republican Committee.
Since announcing his candidacy March 20, Meier has also been endorsed by the Seneca County Executive Committee, the Herkimer County Executive Committee and the Oneida County Republican Committee.
Meier is a state senator. Brad Jones, a former Seneca Falls mayor, is also running for the Republican nomination.
Artists, programs can apply for grants
Funding is available for individual artists and nonprofit arts programs through the Finger Lakes Arts Grants and Services, which administers the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization (FLAGS DEC) grant program.
Application forms and guidelines are available by attending seminars that will begin May 1, visiting the www.artservicesflags.org web site or contacting the FLAGS office at 781-7725. Call the office or e-mail flags@rochester.rr.com to register for the seminars.
The application deadline for the $500 to $5,000 grants is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11. Eligible individuals or groups must reside in Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne or Yates counties and apply for projects taking place between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2007.
Cayuga County seminars will be held: 7 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at the Aurora Free Library at 370 Main St., Aurora; 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at the Weedsport Public Library at 2795 E. Brutus St., Weedsport; or 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Room 244 of Cayuga Community College at 197 Franklin St., Auburn.
The grant program has the goal of assisting emerging arts programs, providing quality arts programming in this five-county area and making arts accessible to under-served and minority audiences.
Benson, Richardson win essay contest
Vanessa Benson, a fifth-grade student at Southern Cayuga Middle School, and Janel Richardson, a fifth-grader at Casey Park Elementary School, won the regional contest in the Newspaper in Education DoublePlay Essay Contest.
The contest was for students in fifth through eighthgrades. It was held at the conclusion of the “Double Play” weekly series of stories that ran in 21 newspapers statewide, including The Citizen. The project was a collaboration of New York Newspaper Publishers Association, New York Newspapers Foundation, New York State United Teachers and the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
More than 1,200 essays were submitted throughout New York.
Students were asked to relate a quote on Jackie Robinson's grave, “A life is important only in its impact on others lives,” to a different person.
Richardson wrote about Rosa Parks while Benson chose Helen Keller.
Heusler to speak at women's meeting
During the next Women in Business Network monthly meeting, a presentation will be given on five actions that can be taken for collective community safety.
Dawn Heusler, of the Cayuga County chapter of the Red Cross, will give the presentation. The meeting will be held 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Cornell Cooperate Extension Education Center at 248 Grant Ave., Auburn. Beverages and light refreshments will be served.
