New road to be named after what mayor?

The Citizen staff report
A new road under construction in Auburn needs a name, and there's a resolution before the city council to use the opportunity to honor one of its former mayors.

City councilors will vote Thursday to name the new roadway being constructed between Grant Avenue and North Street.

The city's superintendent of engineering services notified the council recently that, as part of the connector road being built between Grant Avenue and North Street, the contractor has to supply and install street signs. "At this time," the April 21 memorandum reads, "there is no official name for the Connector Road."

The city council will consider the name at its meeting.

Because it has been past practice of some prior city councils to name a new road within the city after a former mayor of Auburn, the council will vote to name the road after one of the city's mayors, according to the resolution.

But with more than 50 mayors -- going back to 1848 -- how do you single out one?

Sylvanus H. Henry? Cyrenus Wheeler Jr.? Timothy C. Lattimore?

Former mayor Guy Cosentino said the current mayor can't be overlooked as a possibility.

"They have named streets after living mayors," Cosentino said, although he added it would be more likely the city would choose to recognize a relatively recent mayor who hasn't had anything named after him yet.

"They already have a (Edward) Boyle, (Carl) Brister, (Herbert) Anderson Circle and a (Leonard) Greene Street near the (Edward) Boyle Center," he said.

"It would be nice to recognize whoever's next on the list," Cosentino said. "Maybe it should be (Maurice) Schwartz."

Schwartz Towers, a senior living center, is named after Schwartz.

" i think the street name should be after someone in the community that is well known. Mayors are important people, but we already see there name all over, how about a judge? or something similar? "

" I like that person's idea of naming it after one of the Auburn's sons or daughters that have died in Iraq or Afghanistan... "

" Mc Nabb Way is a pefert fit for the street name. Who else votes with tax payers and home owners in mind. Tom votes knowing that a particular item will pass the council level, but what is best for your wallet and future generations to pay for goes on the road side. "

" HOW ABOUT GEORGE PULLMAN. HE INVENTED THE SLEEPING CAR AND WAS A NATIVE OF AUDURN. ONE COULD EVEN ALLOW PEOPLE TO SLEEP IN THEIR CARS IN HIS HONOUR. "

" Let's be honest; when was the last time a Mayor,City Manager,City Council Member, or the Governor of NY has ever done anything for Auburn- - let alone Upstate NY? My suggestion: name the street after someone who has kept traditions, kept jobs and kept people out of the welfare line. These people that I have mentioned above have done none of these things and do not warrant a street being named after them. Too many cheifs- -not enough indians... "Living Large In Texas" "

" I'm big on tradition most of the time and love to see most of them continue. But the practice of naming every thing bigger than an outhouse for a person is one tradition that ought to be strangled. The best way to avoid rancor, hurt feelings, bitterness and even embarrassment, is to cease naming these things after people. No one is going to be happy all of the time, and many people are going to be unhappy some of the time. Just stop it! "
