St. Alphonsus will be offering classes again in the fall for anyone else that is interested.
A special welcome goes out to the newest members of the St. Francis Parish Council. They are Carl Castiglione, Andrea Guerrera, Anita Casper and Mike Villano. Thank you also for sharing your gifts with your parish family.
Congratulations are also in order for this fine group of students from Sacred Heart Parish who were inducted into the National Honor Society at Auburn High School on March 30. Sean Hogan, Jillian LaLonde, Brendan Lewis, Elizabeth Molloy, Flannery Nangle, Andrew Pappert, Jessica Pasik, George Tehan, Elizabeth Vanacore, Jamie Walter, Andrew Brown, Kevin Kiernan and Erica Naumann were named. We are very proud of you all for this fine achievement.
The Holy Family Parish Life committee is hosting a Family Fun Day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29. This community-wide event will be held in the Holy Family gym on North Street in Auburn and is a really fun way to spend an hour or two on a Saturday. Stop by for lunch and browse the huge White Elephant rummage sale or take a chance at the raffle table, which includes a John Deere riding lawn mower or $1,000 cash prize, CD/MP3/DVD players and many other prizes. There will also be a jewelry booth, a craft booth, home baked goods and games for the children.
The month of May is almost here, and is a time when the Catholic Church traditionally honors Mary, the Mother of God.
There are many ways to celebrate this particular devotion.
Many of our churches have a daily or weekly recitation of the rosary. Some include the crowning of Our Lady's statue. The important thing is that Mary be honored in a special way.
The practice of a May crowning will continue in many parishes and schools. A statue of Mary is honored with a wreath of blossoms to indicate Mary's virtues - virtues that are to be imitated by the faithful. The ceremony usually takes place in the context of a public parish devotion outside of the liturgy.
Can you remember making a May shrine for Mary at school or at home? What fun that was. All that is needed is a shoe box, some tin foil and some blue construction paper along with a small statue or prayer card of Our Blessed Mother to be placed in the center. Then, each child can bring in flowers from their yard, often some lilacs, tulips or daffodils, to surround Mary with a beautiful garden of flowers. And I love the beautiful hymns that we sing like, “Immaculate Mary” and “Hail Holy Queen.”
There are so many wonderful churches of every denomination in Auburn and throughout Cayuga County, with great things happening every day. Please know that this column is for everyone and contact me with the good news from your parish.
I am sending out a letter again, to extend the invitation to all churches in our area, so that we can share and enjoy each other's good news as well as encourage and strengthen one another. Thank you everyone for your help.
Have a good week and remember God loves you so much.
Lovely Lady dressed in blue
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!
Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?
Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?
Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things,
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels' wings
Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me, for you know.
Lovely Lady dressed in blue
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way.
- Mary Dixon Thayer, who wrote more than one poem for Our Lady, is the author. This prayer-poem was popularized in the 1950s by Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
