Behind the scenes in the NFL

I just finishing reading an interesting book about pro football entitled “You're Okay, It's Just A Bruise.”
The story was authored by Rob Huizenga, M.D., who was the chief physician for the Los Angeles Raiders for nearly 10 years.

The doctor tells a true story of working on the sidelines and in the locker room of every Raider game.

He joined the team in 1983 and the first year he witnessed the LA gridders rout most opponents, including winning the Super Bowl by conquering the Washington Redskins 38-9.

Huizenga lived in the real trenches of the National Football League, a battlefield atmosphere where getting hurt and partying hard was the name of the game.

The book is jam-packed with close-up anecdotes about football warriors.

It reveals:

The mind games and methods of mysterious owner Al Davis.

The truth about drug and steroid use in the NFL.

The pressure on players to perform even when threatened by serious injury.

Hilarious and harrowing true stories about the side of football fans never see.

The wild life and tragic death of defensive star Lyle Alzado.

Ron Rapoport, a writer for the Los Angeles Daily News, called the book, “The funniest, kinkiest and occasionally the most horrifying inside-football book, it has ever been my pleasure to read... an instant classic.”

Dr. Huizenga noted in the opening paragraph it was a true story, based on his first-hand experiences as a team physician for the Raiders. However, “I have to the best of my ability strived to achieve an accurate portrayal of both the substance and meaning of conversations and events.”

The well known doctor graduated from Harvard Medical School and is a past president of the National Football League's Physician's Association.

He has written for Sports Illustrated and been interviewed on sports medicine issues by “Nightline,” ESPN, “Larry King Live,” and National Public Radio's “All Things Considered.”

The doctor now practices medicine in Beverly Hills, California, where he lives.

Keith Hernandez, who earned a World Series ring in 1986 as the first baseman for the New York Mets, nearly lost it during Hurricane Katrina.

The adventure started in Jupiter, FL where a local jeweler was working on Hernandez's ring-the one he won after the Boston Red Sox were one out away from winning the World Series and the Mets rallied in the 10th inning of Game 6.

Jupiter jeweler Michael Wilson finished his handiwork on the ring before sending it to master engraver Rick Simmons in New Orleans.

With the hurricane closing in, Wilson told Simmons to stick the ring in his pocket before fleeing to Texas. A few days later, Simmons told Wilson he no longer had a house or workshop, but he did have Hernandez's ring.

The former All-Star first baseman rewarded Simmons with a thank-you note and 30 autographed baseballs.
