Pair arrested on burglary charges
An 18-year-old and 16-year-old from Auburn were arrested by police early Sunday morning after allegedly entering a house on Venice Street.
Joseph Alan Ostrander, 126 Melone Village, and Derek Lee Cayirliogullari, 134 Melone Village, have been charged with second-degree burglary.
The resident of 16 Venice St. told police she awoke to find a tall, white male in her room, going through her jewelry.
She recognized the man, Ostrander, as a friend of her son. The man left her house.
Police found both Ostrander and Cayirliogullari at West and Derby streets and the victim identified Ostrander.
The two were found in possession of a few items from the victim's house, police said.
Port Byron budget expected to rise
With projections up 5.37 percent from last year, the Port Byron Central School District superintendent will propose a $16.04 million budget this week for the 2006-07 school year.
Neil O'Brien said he anticipates a 6.9 percent tax levy increase, slightly below last year's 7 percent increase.
The budget's latest figures, he said, can also support a summer reading program that was slated to be cut due to a loss of federal aid, as well as staff at all three school buildings.
The school district is also forecasting extra state aid to expand its Universal Pre-K program. O'Brien said the expanded program for young children should help address the area's drop-out rate.
The superintendent will present the latest numbers at Port Byron's next school board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 12.

Victory man shot, shooter charged
A 58-year-old Victory man was shot in the face early Saturday morning.
State police in Wolcott were dispatched at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday to the shooting at the victim's residence on Pople Road in Victory.
When police arrived, they found Charles Pople, 58, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Gerald Thibault, 33, the alleged shooter.
He was charged with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, both felonies.
Thibault was arraigned before Victory justice Joyce Beman and remanded to Cayuga County Jail on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
The victim was transported to University Hospital in Syracuse with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
