River Poets to give spirited reading

Robert G. Werner will present a slide show from his book, “Freshwater Fishes of the Northeastern United States: A Field Guide,” published by Syracuse University Press at 7 p.m. Saturday, at Creekside Books & Coffee, 35 Fennell St. in Skaneateles. For more information, call 685-0379.
Authors to read from works
Husband and wife authors, Judith Kitchen and Stan Sanvel Rubin, will read from their recent works 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at the Art Exhibit Room in Macmillan Hall at Well College in Aurora.
Kitchen is the author of “The House on Eccles Road” (winner of the S. Mariella Gable Prize from Graywolf Press), two collections of essays, “Distance and Direction” (Coffeehouse Press) and “Only the Dance” (University of South Carolina Press), as well as a critical study of William Stafford, “Writing the World” (Oregon State University Press). Among her other honors are an NEA Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, and a finalist essay for the National Magazine Award.
Rubin is the director of the Rainier Writing Workshop, a low-residency MFA at Pacific Lutheran University. His third book, “Hidden Sequel,” won the Barrow Street Press award in 2005, and his fourth collection of poetry, “Five Colors,” was published in 2004. For over 20 years, he served as director of the SUNY Brockport Writers Forum and Videotape Library, where he interviewed more than 200 contemporary poets and writers.

Winners of the eighth- grade poetry contest at Skaneateles Middle School will read their poems and be awarded prizes at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Creekside coffeehouse, 35 Fennell St. in Skaneateles. For more information, call 685-0379.

The Writers Voice program at the YMCA and the Cayuga Museum are sponsoring a Spring Poetry Reading from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 21, at the museum, 203 Genesee St. If time permits, the audience will be given a chance to share their work.
Budbill reading, discussion at CCC
A poetry reading and discussion by visiting writer David Budbill, a nationally known poet, playwright and author, will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the student lounge at Cayuga Community College in Auburn. The event is sponsored by the Humanities Division, CCCC Foundation, Inc., and Poets & Writers, Inc. It is free and open to the public.

Members of the Cayuga Museum's History Book Club will discuss “My Bondage and My Freedom,” by Frederick Douglass 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at the museum, 203 Genesee St. in Auburn.
Readers can choose to attend any or all of the monthly meetings. The club meets at the first Thursday of the month at the museum. Books for the next three meetings have been chosen by club participants - June 1: “Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869,” by Stephen E. Ambrose; July 6: “No Ordinary Time - Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in WWII,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin; Aug. 3: “The Electric Universe: How Electricity Switched on the Modern World,” by David Bodanis.
