Events blossom with spring's arrival

Spring has officially sprung, and we all know what that means #- DB's Drive-In is open! Every parent in Weedsport has probably been begged already for a DB's cone. Also now open is Burritt's Cafe, located in the former Weedsport Hardware on North Seneca Street. I hear the coffee and pastries are out of this world.

With spring comes many activities in the Weedsport school district. We've already enjoyed the Music in Our Schools month concert by the middle school band and chorus on March 21 and All-County performances by the middle school chorus and high school band on March 25. Our local Boy Scouts held their annual Blue & Gold dinner on March 21 in the high school cafeteria, which included the “crossing over” ceremony for Seth Baker, Lucas Fitzgerald, Ryan Wager, Jon Matthews and Austin Bates, who have worked hard to earn their transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Congratulations to the boys, and many thanks to their den leaders, Tina Matthews and Pat Wager. The Weedsport Association of Parents and Teachers (APT) sponsored the annual Spring Fling for our middle schoolers on March 31, with a Mardi Gras theme, complete with food, prizes, basketball, volleyball, face painting, photos, swimming and a DJ. Kudos to Elaine Cartner, Elle Hunter and their crew for a fantastic job; the kids had a ball.

The grown-ups in our community also had a ball while raising funds for the upcoming fifth Grade Circus at our “Out of Hibernation Celebration” on March 25. Devaney's Riverside Grill was an outstanding host, with Cindy Devaney and her crew pulling out all the stops to make the evening a huge success. The food was as creatively and artistically presented as it was delicious. Thank you. The APT would also like to thank our emcee Bob Scarbrough, local band Too Old 2 Rap, the enthusiastic volunteers who helped with tickets and raffles, a wonderfully fun group of partygoers and the many businesses in Weedsport and the surrounding area for their generous donations of cash and prizes. Thanks to all of you, the National Circus Project and the fifth-grade Circus are funded and ready to go the week of May 22! Parents and teachers will be busy planning the circus in the weeks ahead, so why not attend a meeting and lend a hand? Check your child's backpack for meeting announcements and join in the fun.

It's time for the update on the four Weedsport teams who were involved in this year's Odyssey of the Mind competition. At the regional contest at Auburn High School on March 11, three teams placed first and continued on to the New York state competition at Binghamton University on March 18. At “states,” the Geometry Structure Division I team, coached by Melissa Beerman, placed ninth; the Tech Transfer Division III team, coached by Allison Haslam, also placed ninth; and the Geometry Structure Division II team, coached by Julie Smith, placed an impressive third. Our Division III team also received a coveted “OMER” award for their teamwork and resilience in the emergency absence of two team members and an unfortunate mishap involving an injury to a judge right before the team's presentation. I know we were also very proud of our Jungle Bloke Division I team, coached by Melissa Young, who presented a well-planned and extremely entertaining performance at the regional competition. Although this team did not advance to the state level, they gave their all and should be commended for their obvious effort and teamwork. Great job, everyone.

Time to mark your calendars for the annual Lions Club Talent Show to be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Weedsport High School auditorium.

Coordinator Wally Meier has lined up another lively group of entertainers, all to benefit the Lions Club scholarship program.

And now, my long-awaited “shout out” for this month #- I'd like to give the coaches of our OM teams a HUGE round of applause, high fives and fake teeth (ha ha) for the time, patience and dedication they give to our Weedsport teams. These coaches are busy teachers who come in early and stay late, give pep talks to frustrated students and are basically just cool women to spend time with. I'm sure I speak for all the kids and their parents when I say, “you rock!”
