Cato-Meridian to add staff support
The Cato-Meridian Central School District this week brought its project tax levy increase down to 4.19 percent, less than last year.
With a potential 6.9-percent increase in funds from Albany, school officials are currently looking at a $16.7 million dollar budget, which could help add support for staff and programs lost when the school board adopted a contingency budget two years ago.
“We've tried to put in more people, and also money for curriculum development,” said Crosby Lamont, the district's superintendent for business.
Last month, the school board asked teachers to give their input around budget priorities.
Across the board, teachers who spoke asked for additional staffing to cover programs whose requirements stretch current faculty too thin, they said.
Skaneateles plans to sell BOCES bonds
The Skaneateles Central School District this week continued discussion of a mostly status-quo budget proposal.
With a projected budget of $25.8 million, Skaneateles is looking at a 5.3-percent tax levy increase, down from the 6. 5-percent rise last year. The school district plans to sell its bonds for the BOCES capital project. Dale Bates, the business administrator for Skaneateles Central Schools, said that depending on the rates, the district may be able to further reduce the tax levy.
School districts in the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES district are trying in particular to reconcile the estimates around BOCES aid. In most cases, the estimates were greater than anticipated.
“We still have no idea how they arrived at those numbers,” Bates said.
