“The world is coming to Syracuse,” said Steve Becker, marketing and publicity director of the Syracuse International Film & Video Festival. The 2006 International Film Festival in Syracuse will show more than 130 films and videos from 32 countries to compete in 21 categories, from animation to documentary, best acting to cinematography.
“The festival is a wonderful opportunity for people to see what the world is about,” Becker said. “It also allows people to see how much influence the western world has on other countries and their media.”

The festival will include seminars, special events, movie screenings and plenty of other entertainment. Seminars will address issues such as politics, sound, music and economics of the film industry.

Guest speakers will also provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on getting started and making it in the industry.

With the sponsorship of Verizon and Clear Channel, the festival has been able to invite James Earl Jones to speak at today's opening seminar to kick things off. For the screenings, Becker plans a drive-in movie setup in Armory Square that is free to as many cars as will fit in the parking lot.

He plans to drape a canvas off the side of a building for the screening to accommodate all passerby and any who can find a place to sit, stand or otherwise to see these extraordinary features to be shown. Refreshments and food will also be delivered from nearby restaurants to contribute to, and enhance, this unique experience.

All three days will be packed full of films, seminars, discussions with the directors and “just plain fun,” Becker said.

“This will give area locals a sneak preview at some exceptional films from around the world, and many times future academy award winners.”

Such as last year's showing of “Ryan,” a Canadian 20-minute animation. So be prepared for breathtaking entertainment, original creativity and enlightened with cultural enrichment in media, directing and acting.
