AUBURN - When Joshua Nervina was found not guilty Wednesday in the stabbing death of Anthony Agee, the verdict liberated one family from worry, but only compounded another family's grief.
Even a stern warning from Judge Peter Corning could not suppress the gasps of relief from more than 30 people, most of them around Nervina's age, who crowded the second-floor Cayuga County Courthouse gallery benches directly behind the defense table.
Nervina, 18, put his hand to his face as the seven-woman and five-man jury saved him from five to 25 years in prison. He was acquitted on both felony counts of first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault after roughly 55 minutes of deliberation Wednesday.
