The Scipio Fire Department is prepared to issue a $100 reward to anyone who can help track down vandals who defaced a sign on fire station grounds earlier this week.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office is looking into the incident, which took place between Monday and Tuesday night. Fire Chief Wayne Pettit said one or more people apparently kicked in the $4,800 Plexiglas firehouse sign, which has stood on the grass outside the fire station for the last four or five months, scrawling vulgar language on it.
The electrically wired sign also advertised fund-raisers the department held for various charities, like the upcoming pancake breakfast for DARE.
“They broke all the light bulbs out of it,” said Pettit, who said the incident brought three sheriffs' cars to the scene.
He said officers found foot tracks and fingerprints.
The sheriff's department declined to comment on the case, which they say officers are still investigating.
While the fire department has patched up the sign, officials are still working to get the power back in place.
