United Church involved in community

By Denise Bennett

Saturday, March 25, 2006 12:15 AM EST

Along with many of our local churches, the United Church of Auburn, on 77 Metcalf Drive, is focusing its efforts on stewardship; “Time, Talent and Treasure.” From its treasure, UCA helps to support all of the following organizations each year. I think its efforts are extraordinary for a parish this size and would like to recognize them for contributing to Matthew House, WMHR (Christina Radio), Cleveland Christina Home, Hospice of the Finger Lakes, Cayuga County Habitat for Humanity, World Vision, Cayuga County Area Interfaith Ministries, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, American Baptist and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Field Ministers, Retired Minister Support and several others. Thank you UCA for your fine example of stewardship for us all.
Also at UCA, they will celebrate Mother's Day, May 14 by designating it “Blanket Sunday,” and you may purchase one or more blankets at $5 each. The donations of the blankets go to Church World Service for distribution in the United States and around the world. Help keep others warm like our mothers did.

They are also featuring a Lenten Sermon series titled “Conversations with Jesus,” which will be presented at the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service now through Easter.

The Rev. Horace Brelsford will focus on conversations Jesus had with people in the days leading up to his death on the cross. For more information, call the church at 252-4397.

On Saturday, March 19, the United Church of Auburn celebrated with some special music. For its 10 a.m. worship service a versatile guest musician, Amy Mucedola, performed. Amy played in a trumpet trio with Phil Colby and Nancy Sheehe, along with Barb Vargason on the organ. Amy also performed in a trumpet duo as the choir sang the anthem “God is Our Refuge.” She is also an accomplished oboist who has played with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. At the end of the service she performed “Peace in the Valley” on the oboe. What a wonderful way to share your gifts. Amy is just one example of our fine local talent.

The United Church of Auburn is looking to tap into this local talent and is seeking young musicians and/or vocalists to perform contemporary Christian music at their 10 a.m. worship service. UCA is reaching out to the community by incorporating contemporary style music that is desirable to young people and families. Performances may be solo or in a group. You should have two to three songs prepared. It is the request of the church to have musicians perform on an in-kind basis. Submit a sample tape or CD to the church at 77 Metcalf Drive, Auburn, NY 13021. For more information, contact Sue Waby at 252-9159 or leave a message at the church at 252-4397.

There is also another opportunity available to young Christian musicians coming up in the near future. Kingdom Bound Ministries is now accepting applications for its 2006 International Talent search. Aspiring Christian singers and/or musicians who would like to win the opportunity to perform live at the Kingdom Bound Christian Music festival, to be held Aug. 6 to 9, at Six Flags Darien Lake amusement park and camping resort in Darien Center, have the opportunity to be considered for this prestigious honor.

An online application is available at www.kingdombound.org. Applications are due by April 30. A panel of industry experts will choose selected applicants, who will then have one of their songs (must be original material) placed online during the month of May, on the Kingdom Bound Web site. Kingdom Bound fans will vote for their favorite song, and the top two with the most votes will be chosen as winners. They will enjoy the exciting opportunity of performing at the festival's park stage on Aug. 6.

“The talent search is a great way for independent singers and bands to expose their music and ministries to new audiences,” said Mark Weber, of ChristianMusicMonthly.com. “Kingdom Bound is an established and respected organization, and the talent search is a way for them to help give up-and-coming singers and bands great exposure to tens of thousands of Christian music fans.”

Kingdom Bound, one of North America's largest and longest running festivals, features more than 40 pop, rock and praise artists, including headliners Newsboys, Third Day, Casting Crowns and Mercy Me (“I Can Only Imagine,” “Here With Me”), as well as several speakers, including Dr. Kevin Lernan and Pam Stenzel, among its packed lineup. Tickets include admission to the amusement park rides. Call (716) 633-1117 or (800) 461-4485.

Have a great week and send me your good news. Remember, God loves you very much.

“The good God does not need years to accomplish His work of love in a soul; one ray from his heart can, in an instant, make his flower bloom for eternity.”

- St. Therese of Liseiux
