The village of Weedsport has finally erected a sign honoring the high school football team's 2004 state championship win.
Last November, a year after the Weedsport Warriors' victory, residents began lobbying for a sign to commemorate the win.
Village officials agreed, and after considerable footwork that included securing permission from the state, the sign is now up.
Shaun O'Connor, the superintendent for Weedsport schools, thanked the village for the validation.
“This honorable, generous act further exemplifies the support of the community, which is inextricably linked to a school district's success,” he said.
Calvin Mosher, who coached the Warriors to the title, recalled the general public's positive spirit during the team's championship run.
“It was a good time for the school and for the community,” he said.
The sign also honors the Weedsport “Envirothon” team, state champions in 2001 and 2002.
