AUBURN - While some may equate retirement homes with peace and quiet, sometimes things get downright boisterous.
The Faatz-Crofut Home for the Elderly was shaking Wednesday as step dancers from the McGuire-McDonald School of Irish Dance in Skaneateles performed various reel and jig dances for the residents, in honor of St. Patrick's Day.
“It was fun to dance for them because it makes them happy,” said 10-year-old dancer Julia Judge.
For resident Mary Hubbard, the event was a trip down memory lane.
“The music brings back great memories,” said Hubbard who traces her roots back to Ireland through her mother, Mae Brady. “My mother used to get up and show us the steps and then tell us stories in her Irish dialogue. We're very proud of our Irish roots.”
Glowing in a green shirt with her handmade beret covered in shamrocks, Laura Leone spoke of her love for the “pipes.”
“My great-grandfather's last name was Ryan and he came directly from Ireland,” she said proudly. “I have a granddaughter who was learning to play the bagpipes. I just love the bagpipes and the dancing.”
“The residents enjoy their little St. Patty's week,” said activities director Tammy Angotti. “We have had the dancers come every year because everyone gets so excited.”
