Sports fans should get a kick out of how much memorabilia fundraisers at the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes have assembled for auction at the organization's first charity drive later this month.
The Spring for Children Auction and Brunch will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 19, at the Auburn Holiday Inn. Proceeds from the event will go to a new scholarship program benefitting Cayuga and Seneca County parents who are returning to school and in need of child care.

“It's sometimes hard for low-income parents returning to school, who can't necessarily get subsidies (for child care) through county,” said Cindy Smith, the council's executive director.

So far 120 donors, including Bank of America, Seneca Falls Savings Bank and the Auburn Double Days have contributed to the drive.

Items for auction include New York Mets tickets, golf clubs, a signed puck from the New York Rangers, a signed program from their rival New Jersey Devils and footballs autographed by Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills and by the entire team of the New York Jets.

But armchair quarterbacks aren't the only ones who stand to benefit from the live and silent auctions, drawings and raffles. Bidders can win weekend getaways, gift certificates to area restaurants, Wegman's gift certificates, amusement park tickets and more.

Most of all, the event aims to attract people who want to help others in need.

“We're springing for children, but we're also springing for the community. We hope to get fantastic results,” Smith said.
