AUBURN - Graduating from the eighth-grade is a big milestone in a student's school career. What better way to celebrate than with a class trip to a historic destination?
With the help of parents, teachers and other community members, the eighth-grade students at St. Joseph's School in Auburn will be heading to Boston for a three-day tour at the end of the year.
“At the beginning of the year, the students research and choose a destination that they want to visit,” said St. Joseph's eighth-grade homeroom and social studies teachers Maura DelFavero during a tag-sale fund-raiser held at the school Saturday afternoon.“ After that, they put together presentations that the entire class votes on.”
DelFavero said Boston was chosen as this year's trip because of its historic significance.
“The students must choose a place that is educational,” she said. “They will tour different places and learn about the historic significance of each place.”
Places that the students will visit during the trip include Bunker Hill and Fenway Park, among others, DelFavero said.
“I am really looking forward to having Thanksgiving dinner at the pilgrim place,” said eighth-grade student Alex Lopiccolo.
DelFavero said the students have worked hard on the sale.
“The students are working in shifts during the sale,” she said. “They have helped with everything from collecting the items to overseeing the sale today. Every student has given 100 percent participation. They have been just great.”
Old toys, televisions, ski equipment and household items were among the many tables of items offered during the sale.
“After the sale today, the items that are left over will be donated to the Holy Family Church for their own tag sale that is held later in the season,” DelFavero said.
“It has been really fun,” Lopiccolo said. “The trip is going to be so worth it.”
