SYRACUSE --- No. 4 Villanova overcame an impressive 29-point performance from Gerry McNamara on Senior Day and defeated the Orange 92-82 in front of 33,633 raucous fans at the Carrier Dome.
With the win, the Wildcats (24-3, 14-2) claim a share of the Big East title with Connecticut while Syracuse (19-11, 7-9) falls to ninth place in the conference, even further endangering any chance of an NCAA Tournament berth.
Villanova used a four-guard lineup and made up for its lack in height with speed and terrific perimeter shooting. The Wildcats converted 13 3-pointers on 42 percent shooting from behind the arc. The undersized Wildcats also outrebounded the Orange, 43-35.
Allan Ray led Villanova with 28 points, while Randy Foye chipped in with 21. For the Orange, Eric Devendorf finished with 19 points and Terrence Roberts scored 13 and hauled in seven rebounds.
