ALBANY - The state Department of Motor Vehicles is sending $5 refunds to about 130,000 state residents who were overcharged for non-driver identification cards, DMV officials said Wednesday.
The photo document fee was increased on Oct. 1, 2005, from $5 to $10 as enacted in the state budget.
However, the new law that raised the fee did not specifically increase the cost for non-driver identification cards, DMV acting Commissioner Nancy Naples said.
After records indicated some customers paid the $10 fee for a non-driver identification, the DMV started sending rebates.
Customers who paid too much do not need to apply for a refund. Checks will be automatically sent to those customers, the department said.
Naples said the DMV is working “to ensure that the refunds are distributed as quickly as possible.”
