State DEC offering children's camps
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation is offering four 2006 Summer Environmental Education Camps for children 12-17 years old.
Guided by experienced DEC education camp staff, campers enjoy a week exploring fields, forests, streams and ponds, discovering the interconnected aspects of the natural world.
“We strive to bring children closer to the outdoors through our camps, located in some of the most pristine, natural areas in the state,” said Commissioner Denise M. Sheehan in a press release. Sheehan heads the conservation department.
Camp sites include the Catskill Forest Preserve, the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and the Genesee River Valley. A residential camp in Warrensburg, Warren County, features the Teenage Ecology Workshop, a special program of environmental study available to campers 15-17 years old.
Sessions begin June 25. The cost is $250 per camper for a one-week stay. Applications and updated reports on available space for each camp can be found at www.dec.state.ny.us/website/education/edcamps.html. You may also contact the DEC at (518) 402-8014, or write to the Department of Environmental Conservation at DEC Camps, 2nd Floor, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4500.
