The Polish Falcons Nest will make this week's musical style blues by having Lisa & Mojo Filter play its unique blend of blues, R&B and soul with a rock twist.
Lisa Zeyak, manager of Auburn's Polish Falcons Nest, said of the choice of bands, “I try to change the music style every week.”
This rock-and-blues based band, together for two and a half years and led by singer Lisa Henderson, takes their name from the Beatles' song “Come Together,” a track from their self-titled album. Though they play rock and blues, Henderson said she prefers singing R&B.
“I like to do a lot of the old classical stuff, like Billie Holiday.”
“Miss Lisa” has been singing professionally for three years, but she originally started in her early 20s before leaving to pursue a career and start a family. She struggled to label her style of singing, relating herself with a blend of musicians.
“Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt, that's what people compare me to,” she said. “People tell me I sing like Dolly Parton, but I don't know why.”
Henderson's haunting, clear vocals in her original song “The Letter” complement the rock-inspired electric guitar riffs by Leo Boylan. Mark Hoffman sings other songs like “Lie No Better.”
Infused with the occasional harmonica playing and background vocals, Mojo Filter's music is familiar and comforting, yet distinctive and rhythmic.
Aside from Henderson, the other members of the band include Hoffman on guitar and vocals, Boylan on guitar and harmonica, Paul Carpenter on bass guitar and Michael Popoff on drums. Hoffman was originally with Jam Factory and helped produce the album “Sittin' in the Trap” as part of the Epic Records label.
