Teenagers are known to push the boundaries - and sometimes for good reason. In that spirit, the Auburn High School drama club presents “Footloose,” the 1984 musical that follows high schooler Ren as he moves from Chicago to a rural town and is hit with the reality that dancing is not allowed.
Accompanied by the lively music from the movie, and later Broadway show, Ren makes a stand against the preacher who is behind enforcing the long standing, no-dancing rule, while chasing his love interest who ironically happens to be the Rev. Shaw's daughter, Ariel.
As if moving to a new town with strict social rules isn't hard enough, Ren must also deal with Ariel's bully of a boyfriend who tries to ruin the new kid's reputation.
“Audiences will have a hard time staying in their seats,” according to a press release.
The show's soundtrack includes “Let's Hear It for the Boy,” “Holding Out for a Hero” and the song that can get even the stiffest person dancing, “Footloose.” The score, which went platinum in record time, was nominated for an Oscar in the '80s.
The youthful characters are said to be an inspiring “ story of American strength, told through the lives of small-town teens.”
The cast performing the three day production at Auburn High School includes Mark Sidor as Ren, Camille Clay as Ariel and Max Kellogg as the Rev. Shaw rounding out the leads in a show dedicated to dance.
It will instill a celebration of keeping an open mind when guiding young people and listening to them, because they most likely know a lot more than just the latest dance moves.
