AUBURN - When Erica Naumann heard three years ago that her name was on the former gossip Web site schoolscum.com, she checked. The Auburn High School freshman was alarmed to see the word "slut" referring to her, as she scrolled through the lies on the screen.
"They said I slept with guys that I'd never even heard of," said Naumann, who is a junior today.
Sadly, Naumann's story is not unusual. A group of her peers at Auburn High School shared similar tales of bad Internet experiences Thursday in a second-floor computer classroom at the school Thursday after state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, spoke about a bill he's sponsored to criminalize e-mail and electronic harassment, making it a Class E felony crime.
"'Whore' is the big word people use," said Corey Brown, also 16. His name had appeared on the schoolscum Web site also. Brown agreed, though, that girls are victimized more often than boys on the Internet.
"The law does not keep pace with technology," said Nozzolio, who also chairs the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee. He said he hopes to address Internet harassment in the same manner as current legislation addresses identity theft and video voyeurism.
