UNION SPRINGS - The Union Springs Central School District Board of Education is trying to determine how best to repay its $3.2 million BOCES capital improvement bond.
The district's business manager, Dana Russell, presented the school board Monday night with three payment schedules, recommending repayment at $2.1 million interest over 20 years. Some board members said they would like to see the district repay the bond over 16 years at $1.5 million in interest; Russell said he thought such a schedule would make things “tight” budget-wise over the long term.
No board members spoke in favor of repaying the bond over 30 years at more than $3 million interest.
“That's almost double what they had to borrow,” Russell told the board, regarding the aforementioned third option.
Board members plan to approve a repayment schedule at the next meeting March 13.
In other news:
- Superintendent Linda Rice presented board members with the second phase of the district's capital project.
The school board debated how to spend $623,000 to improve area school interiors and exteriors, including whether or not to install a press box for the high school field. The board also discussed repairing the exterior of A.J. Smith Elementary School, as well as fixing ceilings and lights in both A.J. and Cayuga Elementary schools. Rice encouraged board members to accept bids for the work in March versus in May.
- The board approved plans for a new half-credit Energy and Power class by technology teachers Joe Palmiotto and George Powers.
The teachers said that the class, which the high school will offer for the 2007-2008 school year, stemmed from a need to address rising problems associated with renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The board will continue to look at whether the class supports credits in either science or math.
- The school board plans to hear the district's estimated tax levy increase at its next meeting March 13. The district office is waiting to learn more specifics on what the state will offer in aid for the BOCES project.
