The No. 9-ranked Skaneateles girls basketball team pulled an upset over No. 1-ranked Adirondack 43-35 in a Section III Class B-2 playoff game on Tuesday.
The Lakers came out of the locker room with hot hands and were up 16-3 in the first quarter.

“Our press worked well and they got in some good shots, but we had a lot of rebounds,” Skaneateles coach Bob Braunitzer said.

The Lakers were outscored 13-10 in the second quarter, but still led 26-16 at the half.

In the third quarter, Adirondack had a small eight-point scoring run and kept Skaneateles to two points, cutting the Lakers' lead to four.

With Skaneateles leading 33-28 in the fourth quarter Adirondack hit a 3-pointer and the score got as close as 33-31.

But the Lakers wasted no time in responding.

Skaneateles' Caryn Crary drove to the lane and scored two points immediately following the long ball.

Molly McPeck then got a quick turnover and scored another two points, and then Crary hit two free throws to put the Lakers back on top by eight points to put the game out of reach for Adirondack.

“At that point, there was under three minutes left and it felt good,” Braunitzer said. “Adirondack started to foul us and we kept playing good defense. (The win) was huge. I don't even know if the girls understand what they accomplished going into a hostile environment against a top team.”

Crary finished the game with a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds. Staci Dudden scored 10 points, and Lauren Adams chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Skaneateles plays in a semifinal match either Friday or Saturday. The opponent and location will be decided later in the week.
