Curriculum defined at open house
The E. John Gavras Center is holding an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 2. Teachers will be on hand to speak about curriculum offerings and to give a tour of the building. Parents interested in arranging a visit to the preschool during school hours should call Cathy Barrigar at 255-2746.

Zonta to recognize five young women

Zonta International will select five young women as recipients of its Young Women in Public Affairs Award this year. Each recipient will receive $1,000.

Applications will be distributed to high school counselors throughout Cayuga County and must be submitted to the Zonta Club by March 1.

Local award winners will be recognized at a dinner of the Zonta Club of Auburn, receive $100 and become a part of a larger selection process conducted by Zonta District Two, which reaches from Montreal to Poughkeepsie. Applicants must be between 16 and 20 and will be judged on the basis of their volunteer leadership in their community, as well as their dedication to the advancement of the status of women. Plume to share thoughts on budget

Auburn Superintendent John Plume will be the featured guest on Adelphia Communications and Cayuga Community College's “Inside Government” 7 p.m. today. Plume will be questioned on the 2006-07 budget, aid from Albany, the school elections process and changing start dates.

At 7:30 p.m., “Beyond the Front Page” focuses on “Youth for Understanding,” a local student exchange initiative. Guests are local contact Robert Sylvester, host parent Susan Felter and a student who is spending the school year in Auburn. Both shows air on channel 11.

Marshall to work on health commission

The New York State Senate has appointed former Cayuga County Legislature Chairman Herb Marshall to serve as a regional member of the recently created Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century. The commission will create a process to review information and receive public input concerning hospitals and nursing homes in the state and will also make recommendations for the restructuring, consolidation and closure of such facilities.

State Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, recommended Marshall for the appointment. “I am confident that (Marshall's) experience and qualifications will make him an excellent addition to this very important commission and will ensure that the health care needs of our region are addressed,” Nozzolio said in a statement.

Romantic names get free tax service

Liberty Tax Service, 268 Genesee St., Auburn, will be celebrating Valentine's Day by offering free tax preparation today to anybody with the surnames of Valentine, Heart or Love. Liberty Tax Service has more than 2,000 offices operating in the United States and Canada.

Nominate teachers at local Wal-Mart

Forms are now available at Wal-Mart to nominate top educators for the 11th annual Teacher of the Year. Ballots must be filled out in store by Feb. 24.

Winners receive a $1,000 grant for their school, $100 gift certificate and a Teacher of the Year polo shirt and certificate. Local recipients will have the option to enter into the statewide program.
