The fields for the Section III boys' basketball tournaments were announced on Sunday and four area schools will compete.
In a first-round game in the AA bracket, 10th-seeded Auburn (6-8) will travel on Tuesday to fave seventh-seed Bishop Ludden (8-6), a team the Maroons found success against earlier this season.
Auburn defeated Bishop Ludden 43-38 on Jan. 10, holding the Gaelic Knights to their lowest point total of the season. In the game, Dave Foltz led the Maroons with 13 points while the Auburn defense didn't allow a single player to score in double figures.
The Maroons' Steve Deyo hauled in 14 rebounds and held Bishop Ludden's top scorer, Kyle Roy, to just eight points.
Since the first meeting, Auburn has been in a bit of a slide. The Maroons were a surprising 7-3 overall on Jan. 10 but are 3-6 since.
Auburn coach Al Giannone has stressed the importance of defense all season but has been disappointed with the Maroons' defensive intensity the past few weeks.
Bishop Ludden is a good defensive team so the Maroons can expect another battle, reminiscent of the teams' first game. The winner will play the second seed, Corcoran (12-2) on Friday.
Third-seeded Weedsport (14-6) hosts sixth-seeded Dolgeville (12-8) in the quarterfinals of the Class C-2 bracket at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Unlike Giannone, Weedsport coach Matt Lipiska knows relatively little about his sectional opponent but is pleased with the Warriors' recent play.
“We've been playing good ball,” Lipiska said. “I hope to carry that into sectionals.”
The Warriors closed out the regular season on a four-game win streak. Weedsport is led by sweet-shooting Adam Sweet (18 ppg) but has to get more out of its frontcourt as Dolgeville starts two 6-foot-3 forwards.
“We need to work on rebounding and making sure we box out,” Lipiska said. “We have to play hard every possession and play good post defense.”
Justin McDeid and Ed Rooker comprise the Warriors' frontcourt while guard Brandan Pepin has stepped up his play lately, scoring 15-plus points in the last three games.
In the B-1 bracket, ninth-seeded Jordan-Elbridge (4-16) has a first-round matchup at eighth-seed Holland Patent (6-14) on Tuesday. Kyle Burton is not only the Eagles most dangerous offensive threat (21.4 ppg), he's their top rebounder (11.9 rpg)
Skaneateles (6-14) earned the seventh seed in the B-2 bracket and plays second-seeded Ilion (14-6) on Friday. The Lakers have lost three games in a row and are led by Greg Cooper (15.1 ppg).
Even though Section III has open qualifying, Port Byron and Cato-Meridian chose not to play in sectionals.
The girls pairings are announced on Wednesday.
