workshop planned
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County and the Grow Auburn's Trees program are offering a workshop for city of Auburn employees. Nina Bassuk, a Cornell University professor, will present a workshop on soil structure and how to grow trees in urban sites from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24.
The free workshop will be held at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Auburn, 248 Grant Ave. Participants must register by Tuesday, Feb. 21 by calling 255-1183.
Public land hearing set for next month
A public hearing regarding the Cayuga Nation's land-in-trust application will be held Wednesday, March 1, at the New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls.
The hearing conducted by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is reviewing the application, will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., or until the last speaker has finished, said Cayuga County Legislature Chairman George Fearon. Residents can also submit written statements.
Parking meters replaced in village
The village of Skaneateles has replaced all of its parking meters. Meter enforcement will take place seven days a week, and only quarters will add time to the new meters.
Heart health events to be held Feb. 15
Homic Advanced Chiropractic, located at 22 State St., Auburn, will be hosting events 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, to celebrate February as Heart Health Month and March as National Nutrition Month.
Licensed massage therapist Maria DeMitchell-Weschler will be giving free chair massages, and chiropractor Dr. Lisa Ann Homic will provide wellness assessments. For more information, call 277-1362.
AARP offering free tax preparation
The AARP is offering free tax preparation for low- and moderate-income taxpayers, particularly those over age 60. Tax aides are available 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays until the end of the tax season. Call 255-1565 to make an appointment.
Taxpayers are asked to bring this year's current tax forms and preparation booklets; W-2 forms from employers; a SSA-1099 form if currently receiving Social Security benefits; a copy of 2004's return; 1099 forms covering interest, dividends, pensions and IRA distributions; documents showing the original purchase price of sold assets; and property tax bills, if planning to file for the state property tax credit with income less than $18,000.
